Diptych: autumn leaves

There are a few things I want to mention to y'allz.

First, did you notice I shuffled things around on this blog a bit? Did you see I added a pretty little column on the left side and cleaned it all up? Well I did. Thanks for noticing. This is because I've been toying with the idea of offering up ad space for trade soon, and I need somewhere to put all your pretty advertisements! I'll tell you more on that later, but if you think you would be interested, definitely shoot me an email and let me know! novaisawesome at gmail dot com.

Secondly, I created a very fancy facebook page for my blog and would appreciate it ever so much if you would just GO HERE and click like. I mean, no pressure or anything, but if you do like me, then it sure would be nice.

Thirdly, I'm pretty sure that when I hit 200 GFC followers I'm gonna have a supermegacool giveaway. So, you know, keep your eyes open for that.

Fourthly, did you see I added a couple tabs at the top there, just  under my header? If you click "four eyes tank" and "four eyes yeti" you are pretty much guaranteed to have a laugh.

And finally, I updated my "people I've been tattooed by" post again. There's more info, more pictures, and more cool tattoo fellas up in there. You know, if you're into that kind of thing.

6 tips for riding the bus in peace.

At this point in my life, I've become a seasoned vet when it comes to taking public transit. There are a lot of crazy people, idiots and jerks who ride the bus, and I'm sure it's the same with taking the train or whatever else.

Oh sure, there are days when I think that meeting strangers is the spice of life, and you can't meet new friends without talking to a stranger or whatever... but these tips are for the other days. You know, when you  just want everybody to shut up so you can get home as quickly as possible and watch The Walking Dead with your boyfriend!

Here are a few things I have learned that have helped me have more peaceful bus rides.

1. Identify the troublemakers before you get on the bus and then let them board first.

You can tell who is going to be annoying or trouble by a few key signs: are they menacingly glaring around trying to be intimidating? Are they creepily trying to look down your shirt? Are they talking loudly? Are they not-so-stealthly drinking those weird Jack and Cokes they sell that come in a can pre-mixed? Are they rummaging through the garbage? Do they have seven kids with them and are not even worried when one runs into the road?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, these are the people you want to avoid. Let them get on the bus first, and choose a seat as far from them as possible.

2. Avoid eye contact.

I wrote about this before, but eye contact in a small space filled with strangers really does invite trouble. Just sit down, stare at the window or your lap, and don't look at anyone. Either you're going to attract the attention of the crackhead guy who will then scream at you to "fuck off bitch" or someone's going to start talking to you. Or staring at you for the entire 45 minutes you're on the bus which can get really awkward. Unless you like that kind of thing.

Related: perfect your dismissive yet polite responses for the times people try and talk to you when you are not interested. Mine is usually a distracted sounding "yeah" with a laugh and then back to my book or staring out the window I go.  If they don't get the hint and I'm really not in the mood for a chat, I will tell them exactly that. "No offense but I really don't feel like talking right now."

3.  Bring as much to distract yourself as possible...without looking rich.

I imagine this is more important in a bigger city or a poorer country, but do not take out your thousand dollar laptop on the bus unless you want to get robbed. I usually have a paperback book with me, and if anybody too sketchy is looking at me I take care not to pull my iPod out of my pocket. Bring some knitting, a book, some homework or something else you can immerse yourself in, and try to use the time on the bus productively. Not only will it take your mind off the tedious ride, it will also give you a sense of accomplishment.

4. Redefine your spacial boundaries.

Don't stress if somebody is touching you. Unless they're gross. Yesterday a girl used my shoulder as a pillow ... hey we've all been there. But the second somebody touches my thigh or stands with their crotch too close to my face they are getting called out on it.

Now in most of the arenas of my life, I would never allow a stranger to sleep on my shoulder, but she was just a really tired girl and it's a long ride home. And to be honest, it was cold that day and she was keeping my side warm.

5. Choose your bus stop wisely.

If you notice that you're fighting for the last few seats on the bus with ten other people every single day, a really easy solution is to walk up the street to the stop before the one you usually wait at. Sometimes when I'm feeling extra tired and just want a window seat to lean on, I will walk the extra three or four blocks to guarantee I'm one of the first people to get on my bus.

6. Try and sit in neutral territory.

Definitely avoid the front where the wheelchairs and strollers go, because you will most likely have to change seats at some point. Also, you may want to avoid the back because there's probably somebody drinking a beer and/or rapping back there.

And if you get on a double decker bus, sometimes the novelty of driving around while two stories high is not worth the crackheads and people literally smoking joints beside you. The upstairs always invites trouble because the bus driver can't keep a very close eye on everybody up there; they can't enforce anything without literally stopping the bus and walking up the steps. Which I've only seen happen once. Oh, and the loudest stickiest children with full ice cream cones will be up there too, fighting over the front two seats. It's best to stay on the bottom level in the neutral zone.

I could go on for days about bus stuff but I think six things is enough for now. Do you have any public transit tips or tricks I should know about?  Tell me in the comments because seriously...this is minimum ten hours of my week I'm talking about. HELP ME haha.

Things I Love Thursday

I love having a finished tattoo after walking around in various degrees of outline and color for almost a year! I'm also loving...

These faked ghost photos from way before there was photoshop. Some are really darn spooky!

This stress free manifesto.  (found via Just a Titch)

Just keep going

That the stars aligned and I was able to take this picture a couple days before Halloween.

Danielle's tips for new bloggers. She knows what she's talking about!

What's the first song you remember ever hearing?

---

These retratos pintados that I found over at Lucky Pony. These painted portraits were popular in Brazil from the late 19th century to around 1990, because they were thought to improve appearances. (i.e. make you look rich, beautiful, etc.)

---

I also love...

That I got to do a guest post over at Mary Rebecca about the origins of my smurf costume.

Hey writer, it's time to write.  Some math on how much time it should take you to write that novel.

Kristine's outtake and silly photos from her time in India so far. I especially like the one captioned "bam" hahaha. She's awesome.

This picture of my friend Savvy.

27 really good travel tips. I love to get up super early in the morning and see what's happening.

The super rad Halloween tat party that's going to happen over at Conspiracy Inc. Holy moly. I would get the wicked witch of the west (Elphaba!), the ghost, AND the  evilest looking goat they have. :) Too bad it's a bazillion miles away from here.

Treatise on bread. I feel pretty much the same way, except he forgot my all-time fave: RYE BREAD

The best pumpkin carving I have ever seen.

Gala's golden moment

These lomo fisheye photos of Italy taken by Jenni.

This may be the most inspiring travel blog I have ever read. Kristin is a real hard worker and she has been pretty much everywhere! Do yourself a favor and read her archives some time...what a life! Every time she posts I'm like "WHAT COUNTRY IS SHE IN NOW??" She also takes really great photos.

diptych: copper hair and where my mind takes me when I freewrite

This is going to sound very strange perhaps, but I make plans for ridiculous future disasters. I also plan earthquake hiding spots and tsunami escape routes, like practical stuff, but when I get to thinking about all the 'what if's it gets out of control.

Most recently I was imagining a Hitler-esque dictator invades Canada (because I don't think we could muster one up on our own) and starts killing people he doesn't like the looks of.

Well anyway I figured out a quick and very painful but efficient way to remove all my tattoos. Just in case. It would take befriending a doctor or basically anybody with a scalpel and a sanitary workspace. It would take a few weeks probably, because I'd be a big baby about it, but anyway I think it would work. Then I could go about my days working in the diamond mines or the oil patch or whatever this dictator wants us to do.

I think I might turn this into a short story.

--- SPEAKING OF SHORT STORIES--- *

Yesterday I found out that UBC (the big ol' university in Vancouver) has a distance master's degree program for creative writing. And why wouldn't I get into more debt? Hmmmmm something to think about.

The courses are like "super funtime writing stories all day long at home in your jammies" and "write a novel, it'll be totally awesome and then you'll have a master's degree" So anyway it's something I got so excited about. It's fun to dream about things like that sometimes. I'm sure in the thick of it I would be SO STRESSED OUT and hate it.

To apply you have to submit a portfolio...and one of the accepted entries in said portfolio is a blog! Isn't that neat? I wouldn't tell them about this monstrosity of course, I just like that it's accepted academically as a medium.

*did you like my amazing segue there?

Quake of the Cans 3 - it's all in the details

And now for some detail shots!

Quake of the Cans 2 - yes, it's graffiti day

As promised, more photos of the Quake of the Cans paint-in. Here are some individual pieces. I am ashamed to admit that no, I cannot read more than five of these, and that's only because I know who did them and can recognize their style. I am not street. At all.

Oh yeah, this reminds me of something. You know how people have weird half-jokey half-judgemental stock phrases they say to you about your tattoos? Like these:
1. I heard they are addictive.
2. What will you do when you're 80?
3. Did it hurt?
4. I fell asleep when I got mine.
5. I want one but I just can't decide on something I will like forever.
6. You'll never get a real job.
7. You should get my face on your butt.
8. My husband would kill me.

Well to graffiti guys, people ALWAYS ALWAYS say this:

"I like the big pieces but I just don't get tagging," or "Some graffiti is nice, but not those tags, you can't even read them." Or some variation on that same theme. I am talking every. single. time. I'm not here to defend property defacement or whatever, but come on guys, say something original. And if you don't understand what it is, don't make fun of it.

Up next....detail shots!

Quake of the Cans

A bunch of really talented people got together recently for the QUAKE OF THE CANS paint-in - a mega graffiti jam session - and turned this big ol' grey wall into something I cannot even describe. If you want to check this thing out, it's on Douglas Street, Victoria B.C. at the fifty fifty art gallery.

As my bus goes right past this wall every day, and I may or may not know some of the people who painted at this thing, AND I love a good photo op, of course I had to stop by and take some photos. Unfortunately I had to work while this was going on...

(photo stolen from my pal Cody's facebook page)

But I did manage to stop by the next day while the scaffolding was still in place, and snap like a hundred photos of the finished product.

Big grey wall before... (taken from the bus window as I was going by)

...and after!

I took ninety something more pics that day, you can probably expect to see them all soon.

Warning: shameless friend's band promotion.

My friend Jay is the drummer in this band - The Manvils.

They  recently moved from Vancouver to Toronto, I guess there's more of a music scene there. If you're in the Toronto area and get a chance to see these guys play, (maybe this weekend!) definitely do it.

Anyway I just looked them up on YouTube to see if there's anything new going on because yes, I stalk my friends like that all the time. If you're in a band it's just that much easier.

They have a new album out now called Black Tornado. It's available on iTunes tomorrow, and in stores November 29.

I found this live video of them from last year, and man have they ever grown as a band. Their live show is so tight! Ryan and I saw them play last year too, and maybe because it's always awkward to meet your significant other's old friends or maybe just because we had tickets to see the Red Elvises and had to take off right after the Manvils were done, Ryan was kinda doing the watch checking thing when they first started playing. By the end of the show both of us were like 'whoa!'. They're a real fun band. Okay I'll shut up now but watch this video. I know you have seven minutes to spare or else why would you be looking at blogs? huh? HUH? That's right. Watch it now.

glass in my finger

This is the result of planking everybody. Planking is dangerous.

This is what I heard from the other room:

Kid 1: I was watching this video on YouTube of this guy planking...
Kid 2: What's that?
Kid 1: It's this thing people do where they lay on things all flat and then take pictures.
Kid 3: LIKE THIS?

SMASH CRASH BANG SMASH SHATTER

Not hearing any crying, I sauntered into the bedroom and casually asked "What just happened?"

Well, guys...one of the kids who shall not be named tried planking for the first time...on an open dresser drawer. The entire thing tipped over, spilling stuff everywhere, including a full glass jar of pennies which shattered into unbelievably tiny shards all over the carpet. And then conveniently it was time for all the kids to go swimming and leave the glass all over the floor. So now you know how I spent my evening! Hooray!

Here's the glass in my finger with a cooler background. You know you're in the 2000s when you don't pull a glass shard out of your finger before taking multiple photos to show your friends on the internet.
