Music Monday, ranting and recanting?

For those of you who don't follow me on Twitter...well honestly you're not really missing much.Once in a while I'll retweet something hilarious a celebrity said, or I'll write that my bus hasn't arrived yet, or have a prolonged conversation about reading material with Erin. Riveting. Anyway, yesterday I was zooming through my bloglovin' queue of 167 blog posts I had to read, and I noticed something...

That's right, I am a skimmer. Unless you're wearing a dinosaur costume or holding a kitten I think your clothes are boring. But here's the shitty thing that I noticed. You know what else is boring? Music Monday.

At least I know when I'm wrong. Goodbye Music Monday. You were a chore anyway.

---

Update: I do like things, I swear. A few people were all like "So uh, do you like anything, jerk?"
YES! I love blogs! LOOOOOVVVVE YOU GUYS.

I also like seeing your collections, passions, hearing how you met your significant other, funny things your kids or neighbors do, your dreams, wishes, rants about school, travel pictures and stories, your trouble with coworkers, what inspires you, your scariest moments, your saddest moments, your happiest moments, crafts, nature, grammar, dating stories, irrational fears ...

ETCETERA.
So, to recap, you are all interesting people. But...I don't like looking at clothes and song lyrics. The end.

---

Update part 2: I forgot that I do like to know what Kaylah at the Dainty Squid is wearing for some reason. It's probably all the colors...and cats in the pictures! :)

Music Monday: White/Rob Zombie

Yes, I am serious. In high school in the mid to late nineties I listened to a lot of White Zombie, and then subsequently Rob Zombie. I also went through a reaaaal goth phase. Black clothes. Black eyeliner. Black nailpolish. Black everything. Let me see if I can find a photo...

Um, well I guess you'll have to take my word for it. I'm the one in the back and I'm wearing a Marilyn Manson 'sweet dreams' era t-shirt. That's my friend Sheena in front of me, also in her goth phase, obviously.

Anyway so we liked music that was kind of cheesy metal-dance music with distorted vocals with songs about monsters. We also liked Rammstein and Prodigy back then, so...yeah. I took this video seriously, because I thought that Rob Zombie was a total babe, there was a cool girl in the band, and I used this video as a guide on how to dress and *ahem* how to dance.

I can also remember listening to  AstroCreep 2000, cruising in infinite loops around our small town. Of course, every time More Human Than Human came on, my mom was in the room or something...on the CD there's a lot of sex noises. MORTIFYING.

And then Rob Zombie went on to do his own thing...which was worse. But I still liked it.

Luckily, the music thing isn't the only thing he does. Rob Zombie directed the movie House of 1000 Corpses which is one of my all-time favorites. It's gory as fuck, creepy, and visually...awesome.

He also directed the sequel, The Devil's Rejects, one of the trailers on Grindhouse, a Halloween remake and tons of other stuff. Check out his imdb page for everything.

 ---

I'm being super harsh here, calling him cheesy and stuff...I still have a soft spot in my heart for the guy. AND I just found out that Slayer is touring up in my neck of the woods this summer and Rob Zombie is sharing the headline...guess I'm gonna see him in concert after all these years after all! ;)

I think she had a hard time being taken seriously.

Music Monday: Gogol Bordello

I went through a real Gogol Bordello phase a few years ago. They're fun, and who doesn't love a little gypsy/immigrant punk? Their current line-up (I believe) consists of people from the USA, Russia, the Ukraine, Israel, Ethiopia, China/Scotland, and Ecuador. They also used to have a Romanian guy, so they definitely have an interesting eclectic sound.

This is one of my favorite songs of all-time by them:

I think that you've all probably seen and heard these guys before, but if you haven't...well? You should. So watch these. This next one is more typical of their songs...a bit more punk rock.

And this one is making fun of how boring American weddings are, haha.

Music Monday: HORSE the band

In my iTunes they're under the genre 'Nintendocore', so that should warn excite you. I'm still not a hundred percent sure if I'm a fan, but I do get pumped when this song comes on my iPod. And it has one of my favorite mottos in it:

Don't feed the bears OR THE BEARS WILL FEED ON YOUUUUU.

Music Monday: The Best Grammy Performance I've Ever Seen

Alright, well originally I had this whole video thing posted on how great the performance by the Avett Brothers, Mumford and Sons and Bob Dylan was but youtube removed it because of copyright infringement, bla bla bla...whatEVER.

So for now I guess you can just listen to my favorite Mumford and Sons song. Because it's really really good.

Also, blogger isn't allowing me to delete the video so...it's still here.

Music Monday: GET THE LED OUT

 Led Zeppelin.

I mean, what can I say? Who hasn't had an awkward teenaged moment where you started out slow dancing to Stairway to Heaven and then didn't know what to do when the rocking out started?

It's still one of my very favorite bands ever. Here are a few of my very favorite Led Zeppelin songs:

Music Monday: The Smiths

 Image from here.

How on earth did I not know The Smiths until I was in my twenties? Their music is perfect for sullen teenagers everywhere. Lately they've been high on my playlist and I thought I'd share my favorite song of the week with you guys.

And Morrissey. Two people I know want to get portraits of him tattooed on them.

 Image from here.

They were big in the 80s, so for you teenagers out there, this is like, music your grandma may have liked, haha. But seriously, this song is so great. I've been overplaying it, so I'm sure by next week I'll be sick of listening to it, but for now it's my number one listened to song.

Music Monday: The White Stripes

**note**
I had this post all lined up before the White Stripes decided to break up.
I still like the song for Valentines day though. :)

I chose to play this song by the White Stripes on Valentine's day because
of one particular line that I find super romantic:

"...and every breath that is in your lungs
is a tiny little gift to me"

Next week: the Smiths.

Music Monday: Bassnectar

Images from here and here

This is not my normal musical taste, but Ryan and his kids love Bassnectar ... we went to Seattle this past weekend* so he could bring his 11 year old son to see him live.

Coolest dad ever!

*more on that later
  -------------
Here's one of the most recognizable Bassnectar songs. A classic?
He's best known for live DJ stuff.
I'm so not into the scene, I don't even know what to call it. A show? Concert? I'm one of those really unhip people who says "rap songs" and "hip" hahaha. Anyway, yeah. Bassnectar. He uses a lot of songs I like inside his songs, so there's that.

Here's another song...(starts around 1 minute)

Speaking of this kind of music, you know who I kind of think is cool? Deadmaus. Maybe it's just the giant LED mouse head and all the pretty lights though. Am I high right now?

Uugh, electronic music makes me feel weird in my tummy.

Music Monday: Fred Buscaglione

In my Italian class a few years ago I found that the Putumayo CD "Italian Cafe" corresponded really well with the grammar we were learning and burned a copy for everyone in the class. The music is good, chill, and they speak slowly and clearly for those of you who may or may not be learning Italian. This is one of my favorites from that album.

Listen, sip a coffee, and enjoy.

Music Monday: Chingon

After five years of Spanish classes it was singing along to this song that taught me to roll my Rs.

I've actually written about this song before, but since I have so many new people checking out my blog, I thought I'd talk about it again. Introducing: Malaguena Salerosa by Chingon. This song is on the Kill Bill 2 soundtrack which is where I first heard it. It's a re-imagining, if you will, of this song, which is also really great. Here's a clip of Pedro Galindo, singing in the movie 'Al Son Del Mambo'

Al Son Del Mambo is a Mexican film from 1950, directed by Chano Urueta.

Old Mexican movies are one of my all-time favorite things to watch. Thanks, Spanish 450B (my Mexican Film Class at UVic)! Especially the funny ones. They're so great. Cantinflas anybody? Yes!

Here's Chingon's version, playing live at the Kill Bill 2 premiere
(from the Special Features section of the DVD):

I love Mexican folk music. Somehow it weaseled its way into my heart and now it's stuck there forever. Same with Mexican films. I would love to hear any recommendations for Spanish language music or films that you love (please don't say Y Tu Mama Tambien). They don't have to be Mexican, I'd love to watch something from Argentina or Chile. Or anywhere. Spanish.

Anyway, long story short, if you've taken anything from this post, I hope it's that Cantinflas is hilarious.

 Yeah, he really had that...anti-mustache.
I should write more on Cantinflas sometime, his story is really interesting.

Music Monday: Die Antwoord

Die Antwoord in the house today guys! I chose this song (Super Evil) out of all their songs because it's so darn catchy.

Here's what they look like.

Photos from here and here.

As their website says, "For those who don't know yet, Die Antwoord are a futuristic rap-rave crew from South Africa who represent a fresh new style called Zef."

I love them and have been lucky enough to see them in concert in Vancouver, their first time in Canada. It was fucking awesome. Check this song out.

And because I love them so much, and they're kind of underdogs...here's another song. NSFW!

This song actually talks about the story of"evil boy"...it's not just a bunch of dick jokes, no matter how the video looks. Evil boy is from a Cape Town ghetto, and can't go back because he isn't circumcised.Watch this video first actually, Ninja explains it better than I could, and it's in his cool accent.

And here's the song that's gotten me through some boring walks home from the bus stop. (see if you catch the District 9 reference in the video) Even if you're not interested in the music, give the video a play. The "evil boy" story is interesting.

Die Antwoord might come off as kind of silly and a sort of novelty band at first, but I think you should give them a chance. They're actually from a real ghetto, they worked their way up from nothing, Ninja is like the fastest rapper I've ever heard in my life, and Yo-Landi is...something I've never seen before. I seriously love them!
