be the duck

My 29th birthday is coming up ladies and germs, and seeing as I'm like AGES older than the majority of you, I thought I may impart some wisdom.

I have been thinking about this for a couple days, sparked by an immensly immature and passive-aggressive Twitter war I was sucked into. Which is a big no-no in the first place, because you can never win an argument on the internet. Nobody wins, you just go around in circles forever, getting frustrated and angry when the person on the other end is not worth your time.

That's lesson number one, everybody. Don't let internet things get your goat, it is never worth it. Do not respond. I repeat, do not respond. You can smash your mouse against the wall if it makes you feel better, but don't feed the bears! At the tattoo shop we've adopted a saying: Be the duck. Meaning, let it all roll off your back.

Basically though, the thing that got me was that a 20 year old girl told the internet that "someone" is pathetic for being happy in a "dead end job" and the internet should feel sorry for "them". She later denied it was about me, which is her typical M.O., bitch about someone without using names, then get busted and cowardly deny it.

Now, of course my first reaction was to be angry, but now that I'm thinking about it, I shouldn't let her ignorance bother me, right? I mean, what does she know of humanity? She is judging me based on a very limited worldview. I would like to talk to her about it in ten years and see what she has to say to me then.

Literally one of the most important things I have learned over my 29 years is that everybody has a story. Everybody is interesting if you take the time to get to know them. And I do mean everybody. The nine year old you used to babysit, the seventy year old man talking to himself on the corner...

Everybody has a different path, and if you judge them on their choices or lifestyle it is probably because you don't understand where they've been and what caused them to make the decisions they make. There is no wrong way to make a life, as long as it is balanced, healthy and that the person in question is happy.

In my case, I've found happiness in simplicity. I have the time and mental space to do other things around my job, and during the work week I am basically getting paid to hang out with my friends. Um, to me that is awesome. I know plenty of people in careers who are bored stiff, not making much more money than I am, and slowly drying up and dying inside.

I am one hundred percent content in my life, with the exception of having to take the bus every day and having hurt feet. :) But how many people can truly say that? I am very free right now, I can do what I want when I want. I'm not locked into contracts, I'm not married to someone I hate, I am happy.

If you find yourself in my position, with somebody telling you that you're not good enough, or you are a loser or should do more with your life, then just remember that a fancy career and money do not buy happiness! And that is true. One hundred percent. Take it from someone who used to be "the rich girl" who lived in the biggest house in our town. I left that place and became a dirt-poor semi-homeless hippie. On purpose.

Do what makes you happy and never listen to life critics. Usually it means they are unhappy with themselves in some way and are trying to drag you  down to their level. Stay above it. Let it roll off your back.

Be the duck.

Things I (would) Love (for my birthday on October 7th) Thursday

Yeah, it's...a lot of things. People always ask me what I want for my birthday, for Christmas, etc. and I never know what to say. Of course I don't expect gifts, but it's fun to dream, and if someone I knew was a billionaire these are some of the things I would ask for...click through for where to buy these amazing products. P.S. My t-shirt/hoodie size is usually medium unless they fit snug, then it's large. And my ear gauge is 00g. Shoe size, 7.5-ish. Just sayin'. Just in case!

I would also like a custom shirt that looks like Sgt. Pepper wore it from Lady Hue. I also love pretty much anything from this website. I'd like a round-trip visit to Copenhagen, maybe with a stop off in Switzerland too, to visit some awesome friends.

Ten things I love about you...

1. You're a demon in the sack, hahahahahaha sorry everybody, that's none of your business.

2. You are the most caring person I know, and would do anything for the people you love. I know a lot of people say that about a lot of other people, but I honestly mean ANYTHING: Get zero sleep after a graveyard shift to do something with his kids, spend hours cooking a special dinner for somebody...you take a lot of time out of your day for others, and you never complain about it.

3. You're super cute, especially when you're tired and your one leg of your pajama bottoms gets all rolled up somehow. And you get handsomer each day.

4. You give really good, level-headed advice and always seem to know what the right thing to do is. I always feel like I can just rattle off my emotional crazy feelings and you'll help me work it out.

5. You've always been supportive to me, even when I'm being a weiner or making weird decisions. You stand behind your woman, haha! But really, this means so much to me.

6. Your stupid jokes that make no sense...well, they're growing on me. You have a weird sense of humor but you keep life interesting! You're full of surprises.

7. You throw yourself into things full-force. Everybody on the internet, I warn you now, if you meet a "Darth Skater" in any hockey pool you WILL lose.

8. You are not afraid to try anything and you never seem to get embarrassed. I think you're super brave and I admire that.

9. You've been so awesome with me and my ridiculous foot injury these last few days, I feel like with your strength and patience that we can rule the world.

10. I have one hundred percent trust in you and one hundred percent faith that you love me and that's the best feeling I've ever had. We're gonna be together for a million years.

xoxo

Happy Birthday.

Happy berfday to me! (image heavy post)

It's my birthday!

I'm 28 now. Not too shabby, right?

Ryan had the entire day planned yesterday for my fake birthday (you know, because we both had the day off). We went to Swan Lake for a picnic. We had Tofurky (my guilty pleasure) and then cheesecake (my guiltier pleasure) in the evening and then we went to see Fubar 2 at the theater. Best movie ever. Also? I believe I was the only girl in the entire place, and pretty much everybody had beer under their coats which made for some hilarious ill-timed bottle clanking.

And now: pictures of thangs I saw at the lake.
And in my house.

Presents.
Awesome. Also, I got the best photo album ever
and the coolest picture frames in the mail.

Thanks dad and Tara!

Ducks.

Pretending to jog in the no jogging zone.
Aren't we cute?

Why do they need so many light switches?

I believe I was talking to a really far away duck,
asking it if it knew I was watching it bathe.

I think it remained unaware.

I did! I felt the wiggle in the web!

Owl!

What a great day!

Thanks again everybody who made it special.

EE! One of my photos is being featured on indie ink!

(For those counting, this is my second time!)

Check it out here.

In other news, hey how are ya? I've been a busy busy chap, what with the boyfriend having a birthday and working on stuff and having a job and not writing blog posts and everything.

The bus is really getting old to me these days. I'm doing everything in my power to distract myself during the 1 to 2 hours I spend on it every day. Good books work as long as I have music at the same time to drown out the insane conversations that invariably occur directly behind me. Why is half the bus always drunk? Seriously.

I've been considering watching tv shows on my iPod, but to me that's crossing the line into gettingrobbed-ville. Not that I live in some ghetto or anything but once in a while there's a character who would rob a bitch for sure.

Lately, I've been trying to exercise my mind, because making the same trip every day with unbearable company makes me extremely restless. I got all ninety something podcasts by Notes In Spanish Advanced and they rule. They're free on iTunes, it's just Ben and Marina, a husband and wife, and they discuss current affairs for like twelve minutes. In Spanish. Marina is from Spain and Ben is from England, so it's especially useful because he makes mistakes and Marina corrects his grammar.

And, speaking of awkward segues about Spain, I think for my 30th birthday I'm going to walk the Camino de Santiago. I mean...I know it's not something you can just do. Or maybe it is if you're already in good shape and know a thing or two about long distance walking, but that's not me. So yeah. I have two years to get ready.

That's a good landmark birthday thing to do, no? I'm hoping that maybe along the way I can pick up a little spirituality, in which I am greatly lacking. Or at least see the country I've learned so much about. Spanish history is pretty amazing.

I bet every country's history is amazing if you take the time to look it up though, huh?

Maybe I should get some history books to read on the bus. Any recommendations?

I love it when things are taken too literally.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RYAN!

xoxoxo

Ryan is the kind of guy who will say "I don't know." when you ask him what he wants for his birthday. Or he'll say "Just spend time with me." or something equally sweet and not good enough for my consumerist spirit. So this year after sweating over what to get the guy who lies and says he wants nothing, I got him...a mural.

On one of the busiest streets in downtown Victoria.

It's been up for eight days now and he has yet to see it in real life, but like ten thousand million other people have seen it. Which I think is hilarious.

A friend of my friends painted it. I think he did a wonderful job.

EE! I've always wanted someone to shout me out on a wall somewhere. This is close enough. I'M SO FAMOUS NOW.

You may have noticed the speech balloon that says "Clover Feild". Yeah well, it's this retarded inside joke that's gone way too far with Ryan and I. One time, we were watching the Academy Awards like a day or two after having been terribly disappointed with the movie Cloverfield, and I said all sarcastically that I was surprised that Cloverfield didn't win Best Picture or something like that.

Well, the next thing you know, it's become the running joke of our lives. We'll surprise each other by writing the word "Cloverfield" on things, or we'll say it in a creepy voice to each other over the phone or jump out of the shadows to scare each other shouting "Cloverfield" or whatever.

And the funny thing about the word "field" is how everybody naturally spells it wrong. Have you noticed? So yeah, when I was telling my painter friend what I wanted in the mural I asked him if he could make it "say Cloverfield" somewhere on it.

And he made it SAY Cloverfield. In a speech balloon. Like it's literally saying it! With the funny spelling! HAHA!

Too awesome.

We're going down there to check it out tonight. And take more pictures. And then go out for dinner at a vegan restaurant that rules beyond your wildest dreams. You don't even know.

My birthday is coming up soon. I asked for cheesecake.
